Good Monday morning! Charly and I just got home from our morning walk. It's going to be another hot day, with a high of 102 expected. The air is still very smoky and hazy. The smoke is blowing in from fires in Oregon and California.
As we walk, we are now listening to a new audiobook, The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn. Pretty interesting so far.
Today, Monday, July 12, 2021, is my mom's 101st birthday. She was born July 12, 1920. Happy birthday in heaven, mom. I would sure love to call you on the phone and have a nice chat.
Now onto a little recap of the weekend.
Friday (which I always count as a weekend day), I didn't take any pictures. Charly and I took our walk in the morning, then made trips to Costco and three of different Barnes and Noble bookstores. Charly was looking for some specific books to use Father's Day gift cards on -hence the trip to three different B & N stores. He finally found most of the titles he was seeking. Josh put in a full day and then some at work. He ended up working about 11 hours in the hot warehouse where he is employed. He came home and did some homework. Gotta love a young man with determination and a good work ethic.
Saturday was a run-around day. We made trips to Walmart (ugh) and also Home Depot. At Home Depot, we got grab bars that will be installed in my shower during the bathroom remodel (because I am old and afraid of falling) and also a ceiling fan for our office (because we have realized how hot this room is, with the afternoon sun coming in its west-facing window). In the afternoon, Charly and I took a little trip to one of our favorite thrift stores. I found these three books, by an author I have been wanting to read - only 75 cents each. For that price, I am willing to take a chance on this popular but new-to-me author.
We got take-out pizza for dinner Saturday night.
Take-out pizza and a green salad is my favorite weekend meal.
After dinner, Josh insisted that it wasn't too hot to hike another portion of the Jordan River Trail. I think he was wrong, because I got a bit a of heat exhaustion, and didn't feel good after the hike. Nevertheless, we finished another section of the trail, for a total 4.61 hot miles.
The sky was smokey from the fires but smokey skies do make for nice sunsets.
Sunday morning we had this little guy (or girl?) for breakfast out in the courtyard. I do love watching the hummingbirds.
Charly and I took our morning walk to beat the heat of the day, and finished up the audio book of The Radium Girls by Kate Moore. Wow, this was a long, but interesting, well-researched book about a horrific chapter in American history. This book was heart-rending and infuriating, and I'm glad we finished it because my book club will be discussing at this Thursday's meeting. (Movie viewer warning - there is a movie on Netflix called The Radium Girls. Charly and I watched some of it this weekend, and it does not follow the book. Everything but the condition of Radium poisoning itself is fictionalized).
The rest of Sunday was typical - morning scripture and Come Follow Me study, church, indexing (more Liberian census records).
Sunday dinner was Carne Asada tacos (from the grill) with pico de gallo and fresh, homemade guacamole. Delicious!
After dinner, Josh wanted to walk with me again (I truly love that my 25-year-old son likes to go on walks with his mom). Josh doesn't really like neighborhood walks, so we headed out to Bountiful (my old home town) and walked about the Bountiful Temple, which is just a short distance from my parent's old home. It was hot (103.6 at 7 p.m.) so we didn't walk long, but we did get a bit of exercise and some good conversation. (I didn't take the picture. the sky was far too smoky and hazy for a good sunset shot).
After we got home, I showered and sat on the couch and read pretty much until I couldn't keep my eyes open. I am reading The Secrets We Keep, which is a real page-turner, and Alienated Americans, which is an interesting nonfiction, but not a page-turner.
Coming up this week:
Monday - cleaning bathroom (me), mopping (Charly)
Wednesday - Charly and I are going to the temple! This will be our first time back since Covid closures.
Thursday - Electrician installing ceiling fan in office. Book club in the evening.
Goals for the week:
- Start another online class and do at least one lesson a day.
- Finish at least one more book this week.
- Have a successful book club meeting. A lot of women who have not attended book club before have expressed interest!
That's it for now. I'm off to start a load of laundry, make a couple of phone calls, read scriptures and start the cleaning. Thanks for stopping by. Have a good week and stay cool!
